Fig Trees - Ficus

Figs are self-pollinating fruit trees with large leaves that produce as early as the second year after being planted. The fruit are large and fleshy with small edible seeds. Most varieties produce two crops, one in mid summer and another in late summer or early fall. Plants are slow to medium growing and so rarely need pruning to keep shape, although even heavy winter pruning will not prevent fruit production that coming summer. Fruit production is highest but yields will still be high even when planted in the shade - a rare trait for fruit trees. Most Figs are hardy to zone 7 but some, such as Olympian, are hardy to zone 6. Figs grow well indoors and thrive in large containers.
